When the .NET universal TLD was initially established in 1985, together with the first domain extensions on the Internet, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. Because there were no specific conditions about the usage of the top-level extension, though, dot NET domains were taken and used for different purposes and by lots of people. This extension is a perfect alternative to .COM, particularly if the necessary domain with the latter TLD is not available for registration.
